From the age of eleven Sophie Harris studied with Willim Pleeth, subsequently attending the Chethams School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.
On graduating Sophie joined and spent five years with the award-winning Smith Quartet, performing at numerous European Festivals and making many recordings for radio and television.
Since 1995 Sophie has concentrated on creating new territory for the solo cello in contemporary culture, working with some of today's most eminent composers including Gavin Bryars and Steve Reich. She has had works commissioned for her from the composers as diverse as Django Bates, Graham Firkin and Matteo Fargeon. Currently she plays a wide repertoire in her extensive performances with many of Britain's leading chamber ensembles, including the Gavin Bryars ensemble, the Balanescu Quartet, the Hilliard Ensemble and the Duke Quartet, with all of whom she has made many CDs and radio recordings.
Sophie likes painting, writing poetry and cooking Italian food.
