Gerald Kirby was born in 1959 and studied timpani and percussion at the Royal College of Music between 1978 and 1982. As a student he performed with The European Community Youth Orchestra and G.U.S Brass Band. Since 1982 his freelance work has included performing with many orchestras including London Philharmonic, London Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Welsh Symphony, BBC Concert, Northern Sinfonia, London Concert Orchestra, R.T.E. Symphony and Guildford Philharmonic. He has also worked with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and the Orchestra of the English National Opera, some chamber orchestras and contributed to many theatre productions and West End Shows. His involvement with contemporary music manifests in his engagement with the Gavin Bryars Ensemble.
When Gerald is not playing percussions he spends his time as a Railway Enthusiast attracted perhaps to the rhythmical sound of passing trains.
